We set out to create a useful, comprehensive desktop reference for the Java(tm) 2 Pleatform, Standard Edition v1.2
and from what we are hearing from developers around the world . . . that is exactly what we accomplished.
Our intention was to make it accessible and usable as we expect that any serious developer will have this
indesensible quick reference next to their computer at all times. If you program for the Java(tm) 2 platform,
you *will* need a book like this. The following quote, from someone you may know, characterizes the books
inherent value to serious software developers: " think this book is, quite simply, a stroke genius.
I've been lamenting the stack of Java books I've had to pour over when all I needed was a detail about some
method or package. The Almanac is the one-stop shop I was unconsciously waiting for."-John Vlissides IBM TJ
Watson Co-author of the bestselling book Design Patterns.
We would like to hear from you on the new trim size. We increased the content volume considerably in the 1999
edition by adding >250 examplets and we increased the type size to make it more readable. Something had to
give and trim-size was a natural first suspect. Please let me know which size you would like in future years.

Enjoy!
